To plurk or to twitter, that is the question?

I’ve signed up for quite a few social networking sites over the past several months. I feel that if I am going to recommend social media marketing to my clients, I need to have first-hand experience. One of the sites that is the most difficult for me to stay up on is Twitter.  It’s designed as a way for you to convey to your ‘social network’ what you are doing, or where you are, on an hour-by-hour basis throughout the day.

My family would tell you that I am fairly fanatical (read: obsessive) about being online, but I’m not quite ready to record my daily comings and goings on an hourly basis for the world to see.

Tonight I logged on to Twitter.com to update my “What are you doing?” page and one of my ‘friends’ (who, by the way, I have never met and not sure I will ever meet) told me I should be doing plurk.com.  So, obliging to my ‘friend,’ I went over to take a look at plurk. I found a chart comparing the pro’s and con’s of plurk versus twitter.  Twitter came out on top.

So I guess I’ll stick with Twitter as frequently as I can. I also update my “doings” on linkedin.com and facebook.com where I also have profiles. I have a profile on myspace.com too but I’m afraid to tell you I don’t go there very often.

So the question I’d like you to answer is this:  do you think it’s better to have profiles on many sites and dabble in many sites, or is it better to go ‘all out’ on a few sites and to be thorough on a few?  For those people who have nothing else to do, I guess they can be on many, many sites at once but for those of us who have a job, kids, and community obligations, I think it’s better to be thorough about a few of the social networking sites.

    Hi,
    do you know HelloTxt, hellotxt.com
You can manage your status on twitter, facebook and many more.

  • I like the “all out on a select few” approach, myself. The main reason is that there are so many social networking sites these days, it would be impossible for a 13-year-old girl to keep up, let alone someone working a regular job and trying to do stuff on the side. For a while, I jumped into every new site that came my way. The result of that, of course, is that a few of them haven’t been updated and they look dead. As long as I have a few links in those, I’ll keep them around. But for the bulk of my efforts, I try to focus on the biggest of them: MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. I took a look at Twitter and suffered an immediate anxiety attack. Had to start the day’s drinking early. It seems like one that requires constant attention and if you don’t have time for it, you’ll feel guilty and inefficient. Who needs it?
    Great topic.

Let’s try not to start the day’s drinking too early. It’s not a good idea to drink and Twitter at the same time!

  • I try pretty much anything for a couple months and if I find it’s not driving traffic to my site, I stop. I like Twitter because it’s low commitment (I do it once a day). It’s kind of like in college where it takes a few weeks to figure out which classes you have to do the reading in so you do all the reading for a few weeks. Sure you’re tired but it’s only temporary.
