Giving Back Can Help in a Big Way
It’s officially the holiday season, so that means great food, great company and plenty of shopping! When most people think about giving gifts, they think about the sales on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday or Cyber Monday (extended to Cyber Week this year by many major retailers). However, today’s Wednesday’s Witty Wisdom isn’t about where to get the best deal on a flat screen TV or that diamond jewelry (sorry guys) instead it’s about wisdom for nonprofits — ways to encourage people to give this holiday season.
If you haven’t heard of #GivingTuesday™, get ready to hear more about it. This is the first year of the concept and yesterday marked the first #GivingTuesday™. The movement and term certainly created a buzz and encouraged people to think a bit differently about how they might give or donate this holiday season. Coverage from media across the globe helped to make people more aware of the term and social media was buzzing.
#GivingTuesday™ is a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations.
More than 2,000 recognized #GivingTuesday™ partners have come from all 50 states of the United States, and are either registered 501(c)3 charities with a specific #GivingTuesday™ initiative, or they are for-profit businesses, schools, or religious or community groups who have committed to spearhead a project that will benefit at least one 501(c)3.
Yesterday, NMC celebrated #GivingTuesday™ by making a donation to The Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers’ Christmas Program. For more than 60 years, the Christmas Program has provided new toys and clothes for 1,600 disadvantaged Maine children.
