I love entrepreneurs…especially those who have invented a niche
Entrepreneurs who have created their own niche fascinate and inspire me.
One such entrepreneur who is also a client (and friend!) is Jenny Taliadoros of Kingfield, Maine. She publishes a magazine, a website, an enewsletter and a blog all about paper dolls. Now isn’t that one of those ‘who’da thought?’ moments? Vintage glamour and bling in books full of old-fashioned paper dolls to cut out, dress up, save, trade, collect and enjoy. Check it out at www.paperdollreview.com and www.paperstudiopress.com. Jenny is the third generation paper doll aficionado in her family. Her mother and her grandmother are also into paper dolls. But Jenny has created a paper doll empire! She contracts with fashion illustrators and with big Hollywood stars (or their estates) like Sonja Henie, Esther Williams, Greta Garbo and even Phyllis Diller! Lately she has been traveling to Vegas and Hollywood to meet with stars and their agents, and to inspect their closets for wardrobe ideas to add to her paper doll collections. Fascinating!
Another entrepreneur and publicist is Peter Shankman. He publishes daily email notices for publicists called HARO…Help a reporter out….at www.shankman.com. In these emails, he connects reporters with publicists for expert sources, product info or destination info. He has a feature called “Buy Peter a Sandwich.” I just watched an interview he did on YouTube with Catherine Merritt, the PR Person for Morton’s SteakHouses which he taped, posted to YouTube and posted to his site: http://shankman.com/buy-peter-a-sandwich-catherine-merritt-mortons-steakhouse/#comment-5570
Now talk about a niche: this guy is a PR Person who has created a niche for himself by helping other PR persons to connect with reporters, and now he is creating a media outlet for PR persons to get the word out through his site. Not only that, but he is helping reporters out so I am sure he gets lots of scoops on media leads that he can use to help his own clients. Plus the guy is on fire when it comes to working out and exercising. He writes about all the places he goes to exercise and run, usually early in the morning before he gets on his computer. Truly impressive and inspirational.
I’ve recently launched www.marshallinteractive.com which is a web development company designed to help internet entrepreneurs to create a strategy to sell their products and services online. We’re focusing on the tourism and hospitality industry because my PR agency has been specializing in tourism for the past 25 years (nearly). Because I am an entrepreneur myself, I feel that I have a deep understanding of other entpreneurs, particularly those who are drawn to the wonderful world of the web, where they can make their business grow and prosper online.

Hi Nancy,
What a wonderful blog topic. I have always loved paper dolls. Reading about Jenny’s paper dolls brings back lots of great memories. (Also, colorforms were as fun as paper dolls.) Wonderful to know that someone can bring life back to paper dolls so that paper dolls continue to be a springboard to creativity. All the fun and play that comes from paper dolls comes from the imagination.
I’ve visited Help a reporter out before and have shared that link with co-workers. I just visited your site “Marshall Interactive” and think you are doing a great job in marketing Maine.
Thanks for sharing!
Denise
Okay so I read this and got all warm and fuzzy thinking about PAPER DOLLS. Remember how fun they were? What a great and interesting niche business.
Moira: I’ll send you one of the books. You’ll love it. I still have the little blank books you gave me a couple years ago to collect my thoughts. That’ll be my return favor. Which star would you like? Esther Williams? Greta Garbo?
Perhaps I should suggest to Jenny that she create a Moira Doll. I bet it’d be a big seller!
